Sigh. I will offer my experience/opinion as well. This is 2014. It would be really nice to see the front end on sympa advance like the rest of the web.
One of the advantages of the current UI (templates and CSS) is that it can be customised reasonably easily to fit the look of other sites. Our Customer portal and main websites http://www.godzone.net.nz, make extensive use of jQuery and behave more like applications than conventional websites. I have customised the Sympa UI http://lists.godzone.net.nz/sympa, to present a similar look. If the Sympa UI starts doing lots of stuff with jQuery or a reactive framework like bootstrap, it MAY become more difficult to do such customisations.
My recommendation would be to look at a new UI for Sympa 7 or later, to keep a classic UI similar to the current one that people can use as the base for their own customisation and to provide a separate set of templates for a more modern UI. i.e. try not to break what people like me have already done.
