Would I have to uninstall both these versions, then install libxml2 from www.xmlsoft.org? I'm not sure how important this module is to my system but I'd hate to b0rk this machine in the process...

You can always install the self-compiled libxml to another location on the system in order to preserve your Debian-installed one. It may suck having two versions, but it's what you have to do sometimes when being forced to do the lib version dance.
