Ack, I'm sorry again - I just realized my answer below is incorrect, or 
at least incomplete.

Part of our solution was indeed changing the default footer type. But 
unfortunately, that only worked on a much older version of Sympa. On 
current Sympa, we *also* had to hack the code to manually insert HTML 
tags around all URLs, because of the way it organizes the MIME parts. 
We've been intending to submit a patch, but even after we do that, I'm 
not sure if this will be an easy "yes" for addition to Sympa.

So I'm not sure if I've helped at all here, but I wish you luck.
