Ah, right, sorry... as far as I know, the answer is no, and we ran into 
all the same issues as you, and our solution was to change the default 
footer_type from "append" to "mime" (ie. attachment), so then at least 
it's the same for everybody.

Many mail clients will actually still display the plaintext attachment 
by default as if it were in-line text, at least for plaintext messages 
and maybe even for HTML messages. And because all the mail clients we've 
tested will automatically make URLs clickable if they appear within 
plaintext, as you have seen, it works the way you want it to for most 
people.

It's not a perfect solution, but it has been good enough for us.
