Sure!
In the 5.4 version, we introduced the custom attributes, which will automatically customize the subscription form according to the informations you want to gather.
See: https://www.sympa.org/dev-manual/customizing#custom_user_attributes

Ok, as far as I understand this enables me to add another field, eg "what color do
you like"
and the user could input "a touch of velvet".
You can also ask "first name" and "Last name" which would have the advantage of being a structured information, contrary to a gecos (which can be in the orders "last name first name" or "first name last name")
If I only want to know their NAME (first and last) and I would like to use "gecos_user" how do I do that?
That is not possible through the web interface for now. Actually, the name is a user attribute, which is not attached to a subscription, but to an email, which can have several subscription.
So, in the web interface, we gave the possibility to people to declare their gecos in their user's preferences, not when subscribing. This is illustrated by the fact that (if you don't use any custom attribute) you don't have to fill in any information before subscribing to a list.

If you would like this possibility in Sympa, please fill in a feature request: http://sourcesup.cru.fr/tracker/?atid=170&group_id=23&func=browse

Regards,
I use a lot of soap stuff to interface with SugarCRM, and if I now use "something else" to specify the NAME it will give me some problems.

Maybe I do not understand it correctly?
