My personal opinion on this subject is this:
The sympa daemons (sympa.pl, archived.pl, bounced.pl, task_manager.pl)
are amazingly efficient. Even on modest hardware, sympa can churn out an
impressive amount of mail.
The cgi wwsympa.fcgi, however, is frighteningly slow and greedy. In
order for our site to not be painfully non-responsive, we are running 5
fcgi processes, each consuming 360 MB of memory.
Our list machine only runs sympa (and supporting programs), and it needs
at least 4 GB of RAM (and it still uses swap more than I would like).
However, we are running ~7k lists (as mentioned earlier, it is number of
lists which affects memory). I suspect that 1 gig should be enough for
most installations, so long as you do not run very many fcgi processes.
Having said that, I still think sympa is the way to go: I believe it to
be far superior to all the alternatives.
