I'm closer...

It turns out, that there were two problems.
1) The upgrade of postgres means that the $dbh->tables command in 
List.pm returns not 'user_table' and 'subscribers_table' but 
'public.user_table' and 'public.subscribers_table'. So I had to 
modify the code. If you'd like, I can submit a patch.

2) I had to reconstruct the subscribers_table by re-doing the dates, 
and making new insert strings. I'm still not sure why I had to do 
that, but I did.

But I still have one remaining problem - I can't seem to get sympa to 
recognize the subscribers, even though I've restarted sympa a couple 
of times. I vaguely recall that there is a command to make sympa 
relook at the database - but I don't know what it is,and I can't find 
it in the documentation.
