Hi -

That's interesting.  After reading their rationale, though, it's hard not to see why they made that decision but it does feel a bit odd.

I use Sympa in a non-business situation (a site for religious lists) so I'm really not affected by it but it will be interesting to see how broadly that license is adopted.  Sympas' needs are relatively simple so if there were any problems I'm thinking dropping Postgres back in would be reasonable.

Also - the Postgres driver is what is used for CockroachDB.  :)

Thanks for the reply!

Hi,

I don't use it and, as I can see, a very scalable RDBMS might look a bit overkill for Sympa alone, as we're doing a quite light usage of the datbase compared to other systems.

Of course, if it is your main database cluster for the whoel information system, it makes sense to use it for Sympa too.

If it is like Postgres, you could probably use the DBD::Postgres module, which works perfectly well with Sympa. I did not find a specific Cockroach driver in CPAN.

I think that if you want to know more, you will need to experience it yourself...

Best regards,

David

P.S. : Side note: an interesting question regarding semi-free licence on their web site: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/oss-relicensing-cockroachdb/

Hi, there -

I'm curious if anyone is using CockroachDB (https://www.cockroachlabs.com/).  It's more or less a drop in for PostGres, at least for the functions used by Sympa.  It uses the same drivers, wire protocol, and format as PostGres.
It's a lot easier to setup than PostGres, horizontally scalable and open source.  Also, it consists of just _one file_.  It's written in GoLang.

And, no, I don't work for them, I just like the product.  :)

Thanks!
