I created two lists, then looked for alias files to see if Sympa had done
that
part correctly. This is what I found:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 87 Dec 1 07:25 /etc/aliases
-rw-rw-r-- 1 sympa sympa 398 Dec 11 00:45 /var/lib/sympa/etc/sympa_aliases
-rw-r--r-- 1 sympa sympa 1102 Dec 13 23:16 /etc/mail/sympa/aliases
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12288 Dec 13 23:16 /etc/aliases.db
-rw-r--r-- 1 sympa sympa 12288 Dec 13 23:16 /var/lib/sympa/etc/
sympa_aliases.db

As described in https://www.sympa.org/faq/postfix_howto, I put Sympa's
aliases
in /var/lib/sympa/etc/sympa_aliases (~sympa is /var/lib/sympa on Ubuntu, but /
home/sympa on that webpage) and added that file to /etc/postfix/main.conf .
That part worked; I can send mail to sympa.

Sympa put the aliases for the lists in /etc/mail/sympa/aliases, but it ran
newaliases on /var/lib/sympa/etc/sympa_aliases, which hadn't changed. It also
appears to have run newaliases on /etc/aliases . How that did anything, I
don't know, since it's writable only by root. How do I fix this? (If
something
needs to be put in sympa.conf, please add the instruction to the webpage.)

Another thing: when I copied the first list (users) to the second (devel),
there appears to be no way on the web to edit the description. I figured out
how to: it's in /var/lib/sympa/list_data/devel/info .
