Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for the detailed response. We are using Postfix and it appears to be working - I sent an e-mail directly to and from it with no issues.

I poked around in /var/log and there isn't a maillog or messages directory, but rather a bunch of files dumped there(mail.err, mail.info, mail.log, mail.warn). There is also a file named "messages" which appears to contain a variety of system messages. I did find some Sympa related ones, but as far as I can tell there doesn't appear to be a problem:

Nov  1 10:38:56 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_home() do_home
Nov  1 10:38:58 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_sendpasswd() do_sendpasswd()
Nov 1 10:38:58 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_sendpasswd() do_sendpasswd: no email
Nov  1 10:38:58 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_remindpasswd() do_remindpasswd()
Nov  1 10:39:00 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_sendpasswd() do_sendpasswd(address@concealed)
Nov  1 10:39:00 servername wwsympa[2323]: [robot servername.serverhost.net] [client (my IP address)] main::do_loginrequest() do_loginrequest

Assuming there isn't an issue with the above log entries, can I assume that Sympa and Postfix aren't communicating correctly for whatever reason? Where should I start looking to troubleshoot this? If it's relevant, I'm on Ubuntu server 10.04.

I really appreciate the assistance - I'm a bit of a Linux noob so this is all a little overwhelming.

Thanks,

Hi Sean,

Take a look at your mail logs and queues on that system.  You may have an issue with your MTA.  You may also find some clues in your sympa log (if you have configured it in syslog.conf) or your apache logs.

Possible mail log locations:

/var/log/maillog

/var/log/messages

Look at your mail queue:

mailq (sendmail or postfix)

mailq -Ac (client queue for sendmail)

If you are building a production mailing list server you should probably spend some time choosing and configuring your MTA.  Sendmail is typically the default MTA on most *nix systems and can definitely get the job done, but I would recommend Postfix if performance or flexibility is important.  Postfix is also easier to learn (by most peoples estimation) if you are new to MTAs.

Postfix resources:

I strongly recommend: "The BOOK of POSTFIX" (ISBN: 978-1-59327-001-8), http://nostarch.com/postfix.htm

The O'REILLY book is also good: "Postfix: The Definitive Guide" (ISBN: 0-596-00212-2)

Sendmail resources:

The O'REILLY "bat" book: "sendmail" (2nd Edition ISBN: 1-56592-222-0)

The 4th Edition is now listed on www.oreilly.com:  http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596510299.do

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks! I added my e-mail address to the end of the list there, but now something is wrong with retrieving my password. I went to the web interface and tried both the "First login?" and "Lost password?" links but never received any response from my Sympa install.

Is there anything that would indicate that this is a Sympa problem or might it have something to do with the configuration of the mail server?

Thanks,

Sean Walsh

Hello,

We installed Sympa on Ubuntu server via the Ubuntu Sympa package.

Now that we're up and running, I have no idea how to go about logging into the
web interface. I don't know what the administrator's login e-mail or password
would be and I can't find anything in the documentation that indicates what it
should be.

How can I either:
a) Retrieve the existing administrator's login information
or
b) Create a new administrator?

Thanks,

Sean
