I've just tested it on the same message that crashed our server in 
January, and now it goes through fine.  Hooray!  Will report back again 
after a few days of normal server activity, including digests to many of 
the 3000 lists we host, but I am very optimistic.  It seems very 
unlikely that replacing an obsolete function call with its designated 
replacement would do anything bad, even if it didn't help.  A million 
thanks to Maric for finding that and providing it.
