Yes ~sympa/etc/ directory should be writeable by 'sympa' user because of this file and also because templates might be edited via the web interface. We should probably add information about that in the reference manual...

When starting, Sympa check if the current version is compatible with the
current data structure. The goal is the automatically upgrade de
datastructure when upgrading the Sympa version. The test you report is a
comparaison of the previous version and the current one . The previous
version is stored in a file named ~sympa/etc/data_structure.version .
This file is written by Sympa after it finish the upgrade and later
start of Sympa, the current version and the previous version are the
same and no change are performed in data structure.

Check that file is writable by Sympa, check it's content.

Touched the file and fixed the ownership. Then it was updated when I restarted Sympa, and the next time I restarted my templates were not removed.

BTW: My ~sympa/etc/ directory has owner and group "root". It should perhaps be "sympa"? What is the correct ownership of directories below ~sympa/ ? I'm unable to find any information about this in the doc, and I thought that perhaps "make install" of Sympa should fix correct ownership... If ~sympa/etc/ was owned by "sympa" instead of "root" "data_structure.version" would be written in the first place, and I wouldn't have to do this manually.
