It depends on what path you want to change. If you want to change the 
default /home/sympa to something else, then you should run ./configure 
--prefix=/home/newsympa ; make ; make install
This is required because the prefix defines default of many other 
parameters including bindir, sbindir, libexec, datadir, spooldir,...


Reinstalling sympa is not heavy at all and it preserves all your 
customizations ; see
