It depends on what path you want to change. If you want to change the default /home/sympa to something else, then you should run ./configure --prefix=/home/newsympa ; make ; make install
This is required because the prefix defines default of many other parameters including bindir, sbindir, libexec, datadir, spooldir,...


Reinstalling sympa is not heavy at all and it preserves all your customizations ; see http://www.sympa.org/doc/html/node5.html#SECTION00540000000000000000

All you have to do is something like this :

% ./configure --prefix=/your/new/symparoot

I didn't miss this. But are you meaning that it is impossible to change the location of sympa and that if you want/need to do so you have to recompile and reinstall? Seems to be heavy job!
