It's an option on cyrus, I guess it's an option on 365 and Gmail too.

If enabled, lmtpd will suppress delivery of a message to a
mailbox if a message with the same message-id (or resent-mes‐
sage-id) is recorded as having already been delivered to the
mailbox.

I desactivate it on my servers because when you subscribe several
list you want all their mails and threads. And duplicate suppression
is easily done with most users mail clients.
