you got a direct hit! :-)

After granting the sympa user write access to the sendmail config directory with the command

setfacl -m u:sympa:rwx /etc/mail

aliases were created again. :-)

PS: I agree that using a local lock file is useless when the aliases file is shared by multiple hosts and stored on a network drive. But I definitely don't like granting sympa (or anyone else) write access to the sendmail configuration directory. Therefore the sympa alias file will be moved into a separate directory.
