This is the 'DMARC Protection' feature.  It breaks strict RFC compatibility, but is a workaround for the badly-designed behaviour of DMARC in certain mail domains when interacting with mailing lists.  I provided this as a patch for 6.1.20 and it was later incorporated into the main branch in 6.2.  Note that, to be precise, it does not deal with SPF; what it actually does is avoid the need for a DKIM check on the From domain which is mandated by some DMARC records.

You can find the config in the list config page under the DKIM tab if you have the patch installed on your server.

Sympa manual (6.2.x): https://www.sympa.org/manual/dmarc

Here is a link to the patch (for 6.1.20) as used by Riseup.net: https://labs.riseup.net/code/projects/sympa/repository/revisions/64a844e0db3f5dc73ace21fb4dc7ce249246b440/entry/6.1.20/patches/07_dmarc_solution.patch

I do not have a copy of the patch for just this feature available; instead I have a patch set for 6.1.23 that adds several other features (most now in 6.2.x) and an RPM build: http://steveshipway.org/software/f_sympa.html

However, if your server is not patched, and you do not have access to patch it yourself, then your only option is to use address anonymisation which solves the DMARC issue but does not add the username to the From friendly name.

Hope this helps

Steve

Hi there,

I'm a new Sympa user trying to replace a service which was unexpectedly
withdrawn. Due to problems with SPF and other authentication schemes, the
server I am trying to replace defaulted to replacing the From: header with
"USERNAME via LISTNAME <LIST@SERVER>" - not anonymous, but enough to pass SPF
checks for AOL, Gmail etc.

I have looked through the Sympa documentation and cannot find where to change
my list's behaviour to replicate this. Was it a third-party hack? I'm using
Sympa 6.1.23 in Debian Stable.

Cheers,
Dave
