I appreciate the reply on this; I know that any change will have its
supporters and its detractors, and you can't please all of the people all of
the time.

This is a handy thing to know. Although setting this also removes the very
top menu (the one I like) it fixes a number of other issues, and gives me
some pointers on where I can modify the templates to get the effect I want
to achieve. The big thing was the classes of the <main> tag in main.tt2
where I need "medium-9 columns" in order to be able to have a lefthand menu
on pages other than the list page.

It also reveals that the new UI is far more powerful than I realised, and
the underlying Javascript and CSS does some very clever reconfiguration as
the window size alters, which is the root cause of the apparently
excessively large sidebar space. As the window shrinks, so does the space.

For these, I'll be customising the templates, I think.

This one is a simple fix in the loginbanner.tt2. Simply put, we prefer to
have the SSO button on the right of the Login dropdown, which I can easily
configure.

I can understand that. I suppose I'm hoping that someone else out there in
Sympaland has the same opinions as myself, and has already done the work to
make the new UI more similar to the old one. Otherwise, if I have to
completely do the job myself, I might package my UI mods up for other people
who want a more compact style.

Thanks for the feedback. There are a lot of new things for customisation
that need more documentation -- I'm thinking about things like the variables
exposed to custom_actions and the useful functions, and the variables used
in templates like the top_menu setting. If I had access to update the
documentation Wiki then I'd put something in there :)
