Ah I did not read your original email closely enough and didn't realize
that.

The error in your original message seems to indicate you are running into
the mysql limit rather than postfix (which might still limit but that would
happen later) or sympa.

I don't know how sympa stores the message in the database but maybe there
is some additional metadata/headers that are inflating it? Maybe David or
others can comment...

What happens if you set the mysql max_allowed_packet to something much
larger like 32mb? Also did you try the test listed at

http://www.sympa.org/manual/database#required_tunning_of_database
