Hi Matt,

Thanks for your response, it clarified me at the attachment increased size 
issue.
Knowing that, why if I have a 'max_allowed_packet' of 20 Mb, sympa database 
is rejecting a 18 Mb email?

Email attachments need to be encoded (base64 or uuencode usually) for 
transmission and that changes their size, often making them larger. What you 
are seeing is normal IMO.
