Thank you, this helped me solve the problem. I also got a mail sent
directly to me with the following tips: when fastcgi is used, it is
visible in the web-logs, on apache:

FastCGI: server "/home/sympa/bin/wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi" started (pid 21546)

Maybe both these things should be mentioned on the pages about using fastcgi?
