It's a legitimate problem but tricky to solve :

Some reception modes could coexist (like 'html' and 'nomail') while some 
others would not (summary and digest). it would be inbteresting to draw 
an array of all possible mix and check which of them make sense.

Then we are afraid of some mix that would be difficult to implement 
(like digest + topics). Basically it would require that we store an 
individual digest for each list member (because they could all have 
selected different topics).

I don't think we want to go into this direction...
