directory structure. The permissions blew up, and it took quite a bit of
work to get it all back. Every time I think I have linux all figured out, I

This is why I always use cp -a (assuming it's GNU cp), which is the same as -dpR (and usually -pR on non-GNU implementations of cp, as I recall).
