Being the hands-on people that we are, we would like to know more  about exactly what happens when we do the "upgrade".  Does the  sympa.pl only change the mysql db tables, or, does it modify any  other files?  Do any of the other daemons modify anything that is  related to the upgrade?  We'd like to be able to carry out the  upgrade pieces manually, before we bring up the new version of sympa.

Of course, we could look through the source code, but, if someone  could clue us in, that would be much easier. The following section of the documentation summurize how to upgrade http://www.sympa.org/doc/html/node6.html. Next stable version introduce a new starting option :
sympa.pl  --upgrade --from=X --to=Y    in order to runs Sympa maintenance script to upgrade from version X to version Y . In previous version Sympa was doing this automatically. We introduced this because many (most ?) administrators wants to keep control  on this operation.

Sympa is 10 years old project, so some major changes may need some extra work. The following list is wellkown changes that require some attention :
  • version 5.1 (August 2005) use XHTML and CSS in web templates
  • version 4.2b3 (August 2004) introduce TT2 template format
  • version 4.0a5 (September 2003) change auth.conf (no default anymore so you may have the create this file)
  • version 3.3.6b2 (May 2002) the list parameter user_data_source as a new value include2 which is the recommended value for any list.
