I suppose the password was correct...

The entry in the user_table is not created when the user gets assigned a 
password (to prevent never used entries to be added) but only when the 
user either subscribes to a list or changes his/her preferences.
Sympa does not need to store this initial password because it is 
computed, based on the email address+the server salt (cookie parameter).

I'd suspect that the initial provided password was wrong but I suppose 
that you double checked and did a copy/paste ?
Are you able to reproduce this problem at will ?
