Hi Johann,

My first comment concerns the version of Sympa you are running : I know that Debian still distributes this old 3.x version of Sympa but, because there have been a huge amount of bugfixes in the meanwhile, I consider fairly unsecure to run this version, today, in a production environment.

This being said :

1. What could have caused this behaviour of sympa not to complete it's queue?

The most basic reason would be that sympa.pl process would not be running. Try a ps (or init.d/sympa status) to check this point.
Anyway it would be a good idea to check sympa log files.

2. What should an administrator like myself do in such a case?

Check if the process is running and check log files.

3. This question is on another sympa topic. Sympa never reports any bounced
messages but a lot of messages like this sent to the administrator:

From address@concealed Tue Feb 15 16:04:44 2005
From: SYMPA <address@concealed>
To: address@concealed
Subject: Results of your commands
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:04:39 +0200

> This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Command not understood: ignoring end of message.
No command found in message

My question: Why is this? How do I get it to report bounces?

Sympa only handles bounces related to a list. This one is not related to a list, therefore the return-path is set to sympa-request and you probably configured your aliases to forward it to postmaster.
