Unfortunately it /is/ our primary need from VERP.

VERP is a 2 step development :

* generate variable return path. The solution proposed is effective
with postfix. Is anyone able to propose some similar solution for
sendmail ? In such case those "howto" would be efficience for most
server and no development needed for that part in Sympa.
* recognize VERP return path in bounced.pl : this may be quite easy
to developp. Please could you send us some bounce as they are
received with postfix VERP enabled.

This would also be a problem for us, too, with some of our larger lists.

Yes VERP may stress the MTA.

What would be ideal, and would be something I'd be willing to pitch in towards, is a "use_verp" per-list setting, with a site- or robot- level default. This way we could set the default to "true" for the majority of our lists, and the small number of Big Ones we've got could have that setting disabled for performance reasons. This, of course, makes the problem a much bigger one to solve, requiring changes at many levels of the software, but I think it would be worth the effort. The question then is: Is this even feasible?

Here is are some optimization that could be done in order to keep distribution fast. For big list VERP could be enabled not for every message but only ones a week or ones for10 message distribution process but the relation from the subscriber email and the bouce related email could be memorized in a table (subscriber table or may be a new table). So the benefit of VERP could be used for all bounces event if the VERP was not enabled.
