GD is a graphical library ; it is not required at all for Sympa.
But the Template toolkit includes some optional features that require GD.
I suppose you were trying to install a RPM of Template-toolkit and you had a dependency problem. I suggest you try installing the Template-toolkit RPM anyway, without satisfaying this dependency (rpm -i --nodeps Template-toolkit....)
