Fair enough.

I've always been a bit paranoid about patching systems while they are live, possibly unduely so. It is nice to know that it should work. Of course Sympa itself will only pick up any updates when it is restarted.

For what it is worth:

/usr/lib/systemd/system/wwsympa.service
Restart=on-failure

seems to have made the shutdown process less likely to hang, so I will stick with that unless there turn out to be negative side effects.
