Our Sympa installation has 7k lists and sends roughly 600k messages daily. During our delivery delays (30 mins+) we see all 4 CPUs maxed out, but memory usage is ok. We have a change in to double our core count to 8 CPUs to help mitigate but I am wondering what others are using for similar sized servers.
I don't suppose you are using Exim as your Mail Transport Agent?
We run a Sympa installation with a similar number of lists (although I think fewer messages per day) and it is more or less idle once I added a workaround for:
# Work around https://bugs.exim.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2819
receive_timeout = 10m
Prior to that Exim was taking a lot of effort to process large messages.
This pushed up the load averages and added delays as Sympa will only process a few messages at a time.
