I found another change: 

   chmod 664 /etc/mail/symp_aliases 

so root and sympa can both update the file.

postmap created the sympa_aliases.db w/out error. 

The docs I was looking at were here - http://www.sympa.org/manual/mail-aliases and it says:

and chown the files /etc/mail/sympa_aliases and /etc/mail/sympa_aliases.db as the sympa user.
