One of the things on my 'wish list' for v6.2 is to be able to use the .incl
method of defining external datasource that you use for Admins when you are
defining Subscribers as well, so that the LDAP passwords (for example) do not
need to be entered by the list owner. I'm glad to hear someone else has the
same requirement (and for the same reason).

However, in the absence of this in 6.1, you can use list families to achieve
something similar, if you do not need to subsequently edit the list
definitions directly. You can also use list creation templates to allow
people to give only the LDAP group name at list creation time as the
credentials are hidden in the template (though this doesn’t help for
subsequent datasource additions).
