Amos, i suffered the same culprit, but i've never had the time to deeply
check. Looking that another one have a (debian) sympa english only setup,
wake up me.

Anyway, i've found simply the trouble: i've clearly 'lang it' in sympa.conf,
but inside my /usr/lib/sympa/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES folder there's no a 
sympa.mo
file but a sympa.mo.orig file.
Why realy i don't know.
It suffices to rename the file to sympa.mo and sympa get back in italian.
