Why not simply rename digest_plain.tt2 to be digest.tt2?

As long as you put the file into your /etc/sympa/mail_tt2 directory (or 
/etc/sympa/$robot/mail_tt2), rather than the default directory, it will 
override the default one.

Sympa will search first of all 
/var/lib/sympa/list_data/$robot/$listname/mail_tt2, then 
/etc/sympa/$robot/mail_tt2, then /etc/sympa/mail_tt2, and finally the 
installation defaults in /usr/share/sympa/default/mail_tt2 (note that your 
installation may use different paths to ours)
