Thanks Steve. That is very interesting.

Actually when I talked to the local Sympa administrator he just
removed the default header  'X-no-archive: yes' globally from the
"sympa.conf" file, since individual administrators can in any case
control whether archiving sites are added to their distribution list
or not.

But your solution is more elegant. I don't really understand the
reason why default is there anyway, since posters cannot remove posts
distributed to a public mailing list any more than they can remove
them from an archiving site. The moving hand... having writ, moves on
:-)

Depending on what you mean by "public", I am not sure this is true. A Sympa list I belong to in Thorn, Poland allows posters to delete their own letters even after the passage of many months as long as they are logged in with the same email address. This list has two owners but is unmoderated and anyone can subscribe. I think that it should work the way you describe but it doesn't. A letter becomes the property of the recipient and in this case the list itself with all current members is the recipient. Have the two owners missed a trick here or am I misunderstanding the term "public?"
