I think you're right (both that it is not possible, and that it would be
useful).
To do this would require adding an additional index to the database table
(though you could likely get away with it if your lists have small
memberships). Then, you'd have to modify the program to do this sort of
searches which would be a bit more complex. It might be possible to do it
using a very complex custom function and list-custom-action but it would be
very difficult and very ugly, I think.
Maybe add it as a feature request...?

Hey,
Just noticed that Sympa (6.1.17) allows you to search for subscribers by
email, but not by name.
That's kind of a problem, since sometimes you know the name of the
person, but not their email.
Am I missing something?
