The mailing list for listmasters using Sympa

i'm trying to use S/MIME with sympa to ecrypt a mailing list

I have subscribed my email to mailing list x.
The list is set to "restricted to subscribers and checked smime signature"

however, I don't get the email, and logs below are not making sense to me.
Is there some steps I'm missing?  I don't see any certs in sympa/list_data/
X509-user-certs either.  Can someone kindly point me in the right direction?

The docs simply say  "User certificates are automatically caught by Sympa when
receiving a signed S/MIME messsage, so if Sympa needs to send encrypted
messages to this user, it can perform encryption using this certificate."
