You're right, the file description is not used. Could you please add a 
bug report for this : http://sourcesup.cru.fr/tracker/?group_id=23

We are aware of this and we are willing to cooperate with anyone who can 
help us fill the gap and make Sympa web interface more appealing.
Providing a couple of nice CSS with Sympa would make listmaster's life 
easier. If others can provide nice set of colors, we'll adapt the web 
admin pages to add the appropriate drop-down menu.

We officially open the context for the best looking Sympa  GUI !
The winner will receive....a nice Sympa t-shirt, 2009 edition and of 
course it will become the default Sympa style :)

PS : changes can go beyond color edition ; it could be CSS, AJAX...
