What about providing some means to optionally synchronize custom
attributes with additional user fields in the database?

For example:

We define first a mapping between custom attributes and appropriate
additional user fields. When a user sets or changes a custom
attribute, the list owner is notified and asked to approve or reject
the migration of the value to the additional database field in
question.
