Hi Scott,

This question regarding alternate email is often asqued, therefore I've written something detailed about what Sympa does and what it will do in the future : http://www.sympa.org/fom-serve/cache/247.html

Scott Balmos wrote:

I'm trying to use the alternative_email_attribute directive from auth.conf in my LDAP auth paragraph. Maybe I'm thinking down the wrong lines here. Could someone fill me in? Here's my desired usage setup:

Users on my system are mixed between people who have local mail accounts on my system, and users who have forward-only mail accounts. Regardless, everyone has a mail attribute in LDAP of the form address@concealed. The forward-only people have a mailForwardingAddress attribute in LDAP, pointing to where their mail is forwarding to. email_attribute in my LDAP paragraph in auth.conf, corresponding to the canonic email address, is set to "mail". So no matter whether the user has a local mail account, or is forward-only, the canonic email address Sympa receives is the address@concealed address.

Now, when I log into WWSympa, the canonic email address is displayed, and some debug log code I wrote confirms that the mailForwardingAddress alternate email is being read and set into the session cookie. But going to the user preferences page does not show any alternate email addresses. Also, when the user goes to subscribe to a list, I was thinking there would be some menu or dialog of sorts that asks if the user wants to subscribe with the canonic, or one of the alternate, email addresss.

I really need this alternate email address system to work, because my forward-only users will be sending emails to their subscribed lists from their local ISP addresses (the alternate email address), not the local alias address which Sympa uses as the canonic address. Otherwise, Sympa wouldn't know they really were a subscriber, and would reject the email.

Let me know if I'm completely off-track in how I'm thinking this through, or if there's something else I need to check. Sorry for being such a pest on the support list lately. :)
