I've been running Sympa v3.4.2 at our organization for about a year now, and it works very well for us. Currently, I am testing adding s/mime encryption to some of our lists and I'm having trouble getting this to work.

I run my own CA and I've some experience generating self-signed certs for our websites and believe I've got everything set up according to the sympa docs. I've got a thawte freemail cert for my own use, and am able to download the list cert from the link on the list info page.

When I try to send an encrypted message, however, I get back a rather cryptic response that says:

"An encrypted message from has been distributed to
@ list subscribers.
Subject : "

and a few other lines with all the list details missing. The sympa log says:

Mar 4 16:46:17 hermes sympa[24710]: Error while verifying the message signature. The message may have been corrupted
Mar 4 16:46:17 hermes sympa[24710]: Missing Return-Path in smtp::smtpto()

I've also noticed the directory I've specified for user certs never gets populated with anything, even if I send a signed (but not encrypted) message to the list trying to get my email cert accepted, and suggested by the above message.

From this entry in the bug tracker:

http://listes.cru.fr/mantis/view_bug_advanced_page.php?f_id=0000089

I'm wondering if s/mime encryption is just plain broken in 3.4.2, and if the patch included in that bug entry fixes things up to a workable state? Maybe applying that patch is my best bet for getting this working. Anyone else using this patch?

Is anyone else on list successfully using sympa to do s/mime encryption, and if so what version of sympa? Or can anyone suggest something about my config that might be causing this to fail?

Thanks,

Glenn
