If the version you are installing is a 4.0.a5, then your are facing a known bug : an auth.conf file is missing. Therefore Sympa does not try native authentication. You should copy the attached default auth.conf file in your /home/sympa/etc/ directory.

Although I have been managing mailing lists via Sympa for some time now, a server re-install has led me to a re-install of Sympa. The previous installation (3.2.1) was done by the former administrator, who installed the old Sympa directories to the four corners of the server.--
I've gotten it to the point that the old lists work (including those polling info. from MySQL), and the web interface comes up with the default templates. After trying to (unsuccessfully) apply the old templates to the new configuration, I figured it would be faster to log in and see if the administration interface had a feature to configure templates via the web interface.
The problem: I can't log in.
I've used the 'Send me a password' function, and the resulting e-mail shows both username and password correctly, according to the old configuration. Trying to use this username/password combination however, results in a 'Provided password is incorrect login: action failed' message. There are no odd error messages in either syslog or web server logs that would point to a permissions error.
Where should I look from this point? I find it odd that the 'Send me a password' works correctly, but the actual login does not...
