If it's V4.0, it's the same problem I had earlier this week.  There's a
default auth.conf that needs to be in the $PREFIX/etc directory and
this problem will go away.  I'll forward you the email I received from
Oliver (who rocks, btw) that fixed it.  I ended up going back from V4
to V3.4.4.1 until he sent me the fix. I've been up on V4 without
problems *knock wood* for the last 12 hours. :)
