John, I don't know if you can make sympa look outside of its home
directory for customized templates, but it already has this "fall back"
functionality built in if you put your customized templates where it
wants them.

By default (at least in 3.4.2) if your sympa home is /usr/share/sympa,
sympa will automatically look for customized templates in
/usr/share/etc/wws_templates, than fall back to the default templates in
/usr/share/bin/etc/wws_templates if it doesn't find one.

Is there a special reason you need your customized templates in
/etc/sympa instead?

Don't know. I just put a customized version of loginrequest.us.tpl in
~sympa/etc/wws_templates and changed the absolute path to point to my
customized loginbanner.us.tpl (but still as an absolute path).
