Hello Marc and all,

First of all congratulations for this initiative to redynamise activities around Sympa!

After having been a happy user of Sympa in my previous lives, I had in 2011 the great responsibility to take over the animation and development activities of our favorite group and lists manager as CTO of RENATER.

For 20 years, little Sympa has grown, so did the legitimate requirement of users ! RENATER is fully aware that today, an active community motivated by a modern and unifying project is the necessary condition to continue the adventure. Today, only the expanded model that we initiated a few years ago, inviting more and more contributors to participate, is up to the stakes of Sympa.

Beyond the RENATER teams involved since 2011 - David Verdin, Etienne Méléard, Olivier Lumineau and all those who contributed behind the scenes - I particularly want to thank Soji Ikeda and Guillaume Rousse for their valuable and indispensable contributions!

The success of this hackathon, seen from RENATER, will be to amplify this community dynamics and to mobilize even more good wills to meet the challenges of today: need for ergonomics ever greater and evolutionary, constantly improved performances, handy and flexible code ... By participating, we wish to be among those who will meet these challenges.

However, such a project also needs infrastructure and more down-to-earth logistical support (community site, development tools, communication means ...), and here again RENATER will continue its commitment to the benefit of Sympa.

So "Happy 20th Birthday, Sympa" hackathon, and long life to Sympa!

Laurent

hello people,

a bunch of sympa contributors and users are trying to fix the problems of
the sympa community as RENATER has no activity on the project anymore
(not even replying to the mails).

We already

* created a #sympa channel on freenode
* created a github sympa-community as home for contrib/side projects
  with
  * a mirror of the official sympa code
	 https://github.com/sympa-community/sympa
  * a puppet manifest for sympa install
	 https://github.com/sympa-community/sympa-puppet-manifest
* applied to GSoC'17, ideas are here
       	https://github.com/sympa-community/projects
* took contact with RENATER to ask for acces for infrastructure
  (no answer for the moment)

Next steps spotted as important and feasable (any comment on that are *very welcome*)
are:

* setup an alternative infrastructure for bug tracking, documentation, CI, ...
* create a vagrant|docker stack for developpement/testing
  * docker stack pro: easier for most cases
  * vagrant stack pro: windows contributors friendly
* start a complete new UI from scratch (no more templating: just JS views over a REST API)
* specification of the new business objects so the refactoring can start
* better rely on CPAN (using modules, contribute to them). Obvious examples are Plack,
  DBIx::Class, Moo, ...
* your ideas here

There are loads of decisions to discuss on it so we have to meet ... and it made me think:

Sympa was released on april 1 1997 and we would like to celebrate
20 years of good service and talk about the future of sympa. Let's run a

	"Happy 20th Birthday, Sympa" hackathon

The sympa hackathon will be run at the Atrium of the University of Strasbourg

* April 1 2017, from 9:00 to 22:00 (10 am)
* April 2 2017, from 9:00 to 18:00 (6 am)

register, stay tunned and ask questions on the event on this list.
