A couple years ago I needed to tune our mySQL for Sympa.  With input and 
feedback from Steve Shipway I created this doc that outlines the relevant 
my.cnf parameters.

Check your logfiles. If you see 'ER_NET_PACKET_TOO_LARGE' errors, then
try increasing max_allowed_packet in your my.cnf file.
