I've seen something like this on our system (bulk.pl dying unexpectedly) since our recent upgrade to Sympa v6.1.23 with patches.

In our case, it was caused by messages with certain international character encoding, which triggered a bug in the Perl MIME::Charset module (we had v1.006, which was the latest available with RHEL6).

Upgrading MIME::Charset to the latest available in CPAN (v1.011.3) fixed the issue.  Apparently, a bug was corrected in v 1.009 that caused this crash.
