I experienced a similar behaviour where sympa just started to catch more and
more memory and the whole system went dysfunctional. I had to remove the
message from /var/spool/sympa/msg manually. It was about 30MB. After that
everything went fine again.

I found this kind of error message repeated multiple times:
Sep 21 07:40:57 host sympa[29738]: Can't create new process in safefork:
Sep 21 07:40:57 host sympa[29738]: Exiting.
Sep 21 07:40:57 host sympa[29738]: tools::safefork() Can't create new
process in safefork: Nicht genügend Hauptspeicher verfügbar
Sep 21 07:41:27 host last message repeated 2 times

in between some of these:
Sep 21 20:49:26 host sympa[18012]: "smtpto" konnte keinen Kanal öffnen: Zu
viele offene Dateien
Sep 21 20:49:26 host sympa[18012]: Exiting.

I'm running debian wheezy package
ii sympa 6.0.1+dfsg-4+squeeze2
Modern mailing list manager

regards,

Christoph Holtermann
