Good morning,

Last week I upgraded from Sympa 5.3.4 to Sympa 6.1.3. The upgrade went OK except now I am occasionally getting "Bulk mailer error" messages from the software. If I look at the log, I find an error message:

err Bulk::store() Unable to add message in bulkspool_table "INSERT INTO bulkspool_table (messagekey_bulkspool, messageid_bulkspool, message_bulkspool, lock_bulkspool, dkim_d_bulkspool, dkim_i_bulkspool, dkim_selector_bulkspool, dkim_privatekey_bulkspool, dkim_header_list_bulkspool) VALUES ('75352f483b1d469a0eb7150362d01afe', '<address@concealed>', 'UmVjZWl2ZWQ6IGZyb20gc25vdy5zaG9yZS5tYmFyaS5vcmcgKHNub3cuc2hvcmUubWJhcmkub3Jn\nIFsxMzQuODkuMTIuNjVdKQo', 1, NULL ,NULL ,NULL, '', NULL)"; error : Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes

I've seen in the archives comments about increasing max_allowed_packet in /etc/my.cnf. David Verdin in a post suggested running "sympa.pl --test_database_message_buffer" to give you the value for this packet size.

My question is that, when I run this, I get the following results:

[sympa@tundra bin]$ ./sympa.pl --test_database_message_buffer

info Configuration file read, default log level 0

err wwslib::load_config() Parameter icons_url in /etc/wwsympa.conf no more supported : No more used. Using static_content/icons instead.

notice Sympa 6.1.3 started

info Conf::checkfiles() creating spool /home/sympa/spool/automatic/bad

Sympa is going to store messages bigger and bigger to test the limit with its database. This may be very long

maxtest: 210

barmax: 535500

Test storing and removing of a   420 kB message (step 1 out of 50)

.........[OK. Done in 0.03 sec]

Test storing and removing of a   840 kB message (step 2 out of 50)

Total size transfered:   2% [==              *                                                                                       ]0m00s LeftDBD::mysql::db do failed: Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes at /home/sympa/bin/Bulk.pm line 663.

maximun message size that can be stored in database : 420 Ko

This just doesn’t seem right. I should be able to store packets larger than 420K in the database, shouldn’t I? As a FYI, I’m running RHEL 5 with MySQL 5.0.77-4 on a VMware virtual machine.

This is a critical issue since I work in a scientific research institute and the researchers use the lists to send data to one another. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Pat
