Yip it was a templates problem – looks like the error codes have changed since the templates were created. Reverting to error.tt2 supplied by the installer fixed the problem.

Hi – I’ve had a bit more of a play since and I think it’s to do with the Duke Uni templates I’m using, not a Sympa problem after all. I’ll have to have a play around and see if I can fix it or get in contact with the Duke Uni people.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Michael Ward

Michael,

I had a try with a 5.2.1 release and the error message if much more precise :

" ERROR (create_list) - Missing argument topics"

Are you running a different version ? What parameter did you forget ?

Further information regarding an error can be found in the Sympa log file, expecially those that could compromise the security of the server if provided to the end users (file path, system error messages,...).

I’m wondering if my Sympa 5.2.1 installation is reporting errors to screen as it should.

When Sympa reports an error, it just displays ‘Error’ in a red box on screen, with no explanation as to what the problem is. This was particularly annoying when creating a list and failing to provide one of the parameters – click the ‘Request Lists’ button and all you get is the page with the red ‘Error’ box. A message like ‘’Subject’ is required’ or even ‘All fields are required’. Even more annoying is if you click the back button, you have to enter all of the information again.

Another example is at the logon prompt. Once again just the ‘Error’ box – no indication as to why the authentication failed, ie because the password was wrong or the usercode simply didn’t exist. This meant that when I was trying to get LDAP authentication working, I had to rely on the log file to find out why the authentication was failing.

So is this just how Sympa works or is there something wrong with my setup??
