Sympa provides a way to disable its native authentication system. This can be configured in the auth.conf file (Eg: only allow CAS based or LDAP based authentication).

Note that when using the native authentication system, new users get assigned an initial password that is not stored in the database at first. This is a "computed password" (based on email address and server secret). An entry is created in the database if the user either subscribes to a list or customizes his password/settings.

I want to allow current users (eg: a subscriber to any existing list) the ability to request their password if they forget it. I do not want to allow people using that interface the ability to create an account in Sympa's internal database. At the moment they seem tied together and it appears >that there is no distinction at a template or scenari level between wether the user exists or not for this option.

This is *exactly* what I wish to do as well. There was no reply to this, which tends to make me think there was no way to do it then. But that was 2003. Is there a way to do it now? If it has been previously discussed, let me know and
I'll keep digging around in the archives.
